For what we use it
we use the past simple for states and actions which happened in the past .. we often say when the action happen for example I saw someone famous yesterday
The action can be short or long , single or repeated
for example I dropped the glass and it broke on the floor He took the train to work everyday
we also use the Past simple to talk about states in the past
for example when I was young , I loved playing with my toys I loved playing with my toys = she used to do that at the past she isn't now
